[edit 6.28am] Just further testing the boundaries of normalness. I've never been so excited to hear the sprinklers go off in the garden downstairs at 5.20am, listening to the 6am news or being awake and told off when my dad woke up to go to work 5mins ago.

Today's lesson: normality.
Let's start questioning what normal really is...

Is it really normal to:
  • be at uni studying till 12am happily
  • be watching the world cup when an exam is in 6 hours time
  • drink 1L or water in one gulp
  • eat bananas from the back to the front
But what makes that any different to:
  • pigs flying
  • water running up a waterfall
  • airplanes flying under the sea
  • me speaking english correctly for once (thus repealing s18)
They would all be abnormal, right, given the meaning "opposite of normal".

So does that class me as "abnormal"? Or are we going to have varying degrees of abnormality...
What does it mean when people say: "oh that's the normal thing to do"... who's (ab)normality does it refer to? Mine or yours?

So if I'm having a "normal day", how abnormal was it really? Can you tell by my expression?

And if today's weather was simply "normal", does that just mean frogs didn't start falling from the sky?

Now go, and consider your normality and the abnormality of the world around you.

Well since there is no legislation that governs the definition of normal (afaik) then it's really up to how people perceive what is normal. As you have stated, different people have their views on what exactly normal is. Also, in one environment, something normal may not be as normal in another environment. An environment can be a country, a setting or even a dream or movie. Different things will seem normal to you in a different environment. Also, the way people think as well. Some people are more open than others and will be more open-minded to things that may not be as normal and consider it as normal. The media has a big influence on what we think of as normal, unfortunately. The TV shows we watch, the news we read, the people we talk to, all influence our thoughts as to what normal is. Then again, how can we make up our mind if we don't have something to compare it to. I think it's all so confusing really.

Sorry if there are typo's in this comment. My keyboard batteries need changing me thinks, since I'm skipping letters!

If I didn't have work, I would probably be up until that hour too.. thus, in my opinion, it is perfectly NORMAL to

        a) listen to the sprinklers turning on at 5.20am
        b) be told off by parents who get up early to go to work
        c) in my case, listen for the garbage truck, and the street sweeper both of which come by in the time between 5am and 5:20am on Monday mornings (well, the street sweeper every morning, but I disgress)

In other words, "NORMAL?!? WHAT NORMAL?!?" I laugh in the face of normality. :P

        normal?
        * be at uni studying till 12am happily - yes, provided you have company. time goes really fast when you're concentrating (read: when cramming and you're out of time..)
        * be watching the world cup when an exam is in 6 hours time - absolutely, provided you've pretty much studied all you can and are immensely bored of the subject already, as well as due to escalated need for mindless destressing
        * drink 1L of water in one gulp - hmmm.. i can do that in TWO XDDDD
        * eat bananas from the back to the front - matter of perspective
        * being awake at 5am/6am - yeh that sure feels weird and screws up your body clock. but perfectly normal for university students. be glad you're not doing design/archi/IT etc ^.-

        normal's boring anyway...

I'm glad that we're all rebels to the normal cause!
