用短訊離婚sms.divorce

The world may soon see their first case of divorce by sms in Egypt. An Egyptian woman is seeking clarification in the courts on the validity of her husband's divorce through sms.

In Sharia law, a man is allowed to divorce a woman if they unilaterally declare their intent on doing so three times.

Here, the woman had missed a phone call from her husband. Subsequently he sent an sms expressing intent to divorce her. It was his third sms showing such intent, which under Sharia law would be sufficient. The court has been sought to clarify the current status of her marriage.

Malaysia, which is also a Muslamic country has banned the practice. Such divorces generate much debate in these countries.
