bird flu spreads in hong kong
The H5N1 virus re-emerged in Hong Kong in Sham Shui Po's Po On Road Market (深水埗保安道街市) for the first time in seven years on 7 June 2008. The virus has now been detected in three other markets in the city: Fanling's Luen Wo Hui Market (粉嶺聯和墟街市), Tuen Mun's Yan Oi Market (屯門仁愛街市) and Ap Lei Chau Market (鴨婣洲街市).As a result, the government has initiated a city-wide slaughtering of all 3,500 live chickens in Hong Kong markets and live produce sellers. Stall owners will be compensated HK$30 for each chicken slaughtered. To understand the scope, 10,000 chickens were sold in the last five days alone.
The 21-day embargo on the sale of live chickens from domestic and mainland vendors continues. It is believed smuggling is the cause of this virus outbreak.
