nsw loses in tourism
A review into NSW state tourism has suggested among other items, that Newcastle's Williamtown RAAF airbase become NSW's second international airport connected by a high-speed train service to Sydney.The report is scathing at the state's handling of tourism after the Sydney Olympics, in particular the shrinking in real terms of funding given to the state-run Tourism NSW. It is also critical at the lack of coordination and 'one-size-fits-all' approach at the state-run agency.
Among the other recommendations include commericialising national parks, increasing the number of international students and completely rebranding for Sydney.
Much should be learnt from the successes of Victoria's tourism campaign over the last 10 years, which has resulted in Melbourne overtaking Sydney as most preferred city. Melbourne is marketed as a city of culture which should be enjoyed and experienced. Meanwhile, Sydney is famous only for its icons which can just be seen once and that's it.
Monocle magazine has ranked Melbourne 9th most liveable rising two places, while Sydney fell three places to 11th in a survey of each city's quality of life. Copenhagen took first place and Tokyo was third. Cities were ranked on various aspects including city initiatives, liquor laws, crime levels, public transport and so on.
