the secret intellectual property treaty
Obtained by Wikileaks, the alleged proposal document Discussion Paper on a Possible Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement was reportedly only provided to selected organisations. A simple read of it proposes expansive powers to seize and destroy devices suspected to infringe intellectual property laws and the granting of safeguards to ISPs from liability in return for unprecedented cooperation levels.
The document is a must-read for anyone concerned about what could become future law, if you trust the authenticity of this report. It shows how desperate select industries are in driving legislative change in this losing race to combat piracy.
Almost everyone is at risk of infringement in some way under these new proposals.
When: It is expected the agreement will be finalised at the G8 Summit in Tokyo on 7-9 July 2008 with minimal media scrutiny.
