the ledger effect
The Dark Knight has broken box office records in the United States on its opening midnight debut taking in US$18.5m and surpassing 2005's Star Wars The Revenge of the Sith (US$16.9m).Audiences have had nothing but praise and adulation for Heath Ledger's performance as Joker, with calls to have him nominated for a posthumous Oscar. If he is to be nominated, he will be the seventh person to do so. If he wins, he will only be the second person after Peter Finch who won for "Network" in 1976. James Dean was nominated for best actor twice after his death in 1955 and 1956.
The Dark Knight opened in Australia two days before the United States and Europe. To combat illegal taping of the film, some cinema operators used night vision goggles to monitor the theatre and eject those doing the wrong thing.
Go see the movie. I'll wait for Tuesday.
