so where's this kangaroo?
Sorry, I was meant to say Boomerang. No no... what I was really meant to say was Barangaroo...I had never heard of this place until now. I am sure most of you have seen in the last week, signs around the city and major city train stations with 'Barangaroo [arrow]' on it. Understandably, this empty land has transformed into the city's major venue, hosting the majority of the World Youth Day celebrations.
And what a wonderful sight Barangaroo was from the air on Tuesday. The largest expanse of empty land in Sydney city packed full of happy flag waving pilgrims.
Consuming most of Millers Point in an area formerly known as East Darling Harbour and now otherwise known as Hungry Mile, Barangaroo is the newest precinct in Sydney. Located at the old container terminal north of King Street Wharf and west of Hickson Road, this is going to be Sydney's newest 11 hectare foreshore project with 1.4km of foreshore frontage.
Right now it is empty land. The old wharf was demolished in February. The NSW Government's call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to jointly develop Stage 1 of this precinct closed in June. The Consolidated Concept Plan provided to:
- 'complete' the Sydney skyline by reconnecting the west with the CBD
- provide a western facade to match the east side
- integrate the road and transport systems into the city network
- "cover a range of agendas including social inclusiveness, sustainability opportunities, activation strategies and cultural needs"
- produce guidelines on the mix, scale, location and height of the proposed built form land uses
