Looking just one step ahead, and we now hit 2016. By then, I will be 30. By that time, I might even be living in Tokyo. Notwithstanding that,I am still vying for Tokyo to win the Olympic bid to be host city of the 2016 Olympic Games. The candidate cities for the are:
- Tokyo, Japan (8.3)
- Chicago, United States (7.0)
- Madrid, Spain (8.1)
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (6.4)
As part of the Tokyo bid is a planned redevelopment of an area in Tokyo Bay, as well as the relocation of Tsukiji Fish Markets to make way for the planned media centre. The Olympic Stadium will be built in Yoyogi Park. Many of the facilities used for the 1964 games will be refurbished and reused.Should Pyeongchang, South Korea lose the bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics, there may be movement to give votes to the Japanese, though chances are slim after Beijing 2008.
Madrid is the next strongest bid of the candidate cities. This is their third bid for the Games. The Spanish capital boasts the highest city support of all the bids, with 90% of citizens supporting the idea. The hosting rights may be thwarted because of the IOC's 'rotation' policy. I think that London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Madrid 2016 may be too much Europe for the IOC to permit.
Although I do like their logo. It is meant to welcome the world to Spain.
The biggest problem for this city is its lack of infrastructure. It's non committal to build new metro lines and to use high speed shuttle buses instead does not benefit the bid. There would need to be a considerable expansion in public transport before the Games if awarded. However on the bright side, awarding the games to Rio de Janeiro would be a welcome boost to the Olympic movement. Such a colourful and vibrant city with its carnival atmosphere would be a great venue.
