沙田 (Sha Tin) has overtaken 東涌 (Tung Chung) to be the most polluted place in Hong Kong in 2007. In a surprise to many, areas also in the critical list are the New Territories towns of 元朗 (Yuen Long), 大埔 (Tai Po) and 塔門 (Tap Mun). The situation is not expected to get any better.Hong Kong can do nothing to stop the pollution blown over from mainland China. The pollution index spiked to record levels in excess of 200 ('extreme') in some of these places recently. Compare this with Sydney on a nice day with pollution of 35.
Current air quality index figures: Hong Kong, Sydney
Hong Kong is now facing its biggest air pollution problem ever, and the majority of which is not even its own doing.
