hurricane gustav

Three years after Hurricane Katrina caused widespread chaos across the city, New Orleans is once again evacuating as Hurricane Gustav slowly makes its way towards the American Gulf coast. Mandatory evacuations begun on Saturday in coastal areas of the city. Traffic jams are visible north and eastbound on all roads leading out of New Orleans.

Currently a category four hurricane (on a scale of 1-5), Gustav may strengthen into the highest category five hurricane as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico. It has already wrecked havoc across the Caribbean.

Gustav is expected to make landfall in near New Orleans on Monday afternoon.

thailand chaos

Unrest in Thailand has caused three airports to be closed and widespread panic to sweep across south-east Asia. The closed airports in Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai have left tens of thousands of people stranded.

This unrest is attributed to an political uprising intending to overthrow the incumbent government. Activists have already marched into Government House and broken into the Prime Minister's offices in Bangkok.

The political instability of this region is of major concern, especially to travellers in the area. The unpredictability of what may happen, and when, is of particular worry. May 2008 was the last time Thailand descended into unrest.
