fake it
I am really saddened (again) to hear the news that babies are dying in China because of fake products. This time, the scandal has affected a new and innocent generation of people- babies. Sanlu is one of the top-6 companies that supply milk powder in China. A white contaminant called melamine has been detected in its powder, which was found to be the primary cause of babies in China developing kidney stones and subsequently dying. There have been three fatalities thus far, and hundreds with kidney stones.
This leads me to ponder China's increasing wealth and at what cost. For hundreds if not thousands of years, people have been relatively poor and living off a traditional peasant lifestyle with very conservative values. Over the last 20 years, China has reinvented itself as a commercial powerhouse. At the same time, hundreds of millions of Chinese people have seen the light to a new and better life, away from poverty and hunger. The movement into the richer classes has been fast. I am not sure where the Chinese got their cunning from, but this is where my theory begins.
I believe that people have loss all sense of self-righteousness and decency when attracted by a beckoning of wealth. I believe that it is the greed for money that is the root of all evil. Having been poor for so long, people will give life and limb (better if it's other people's) to get money. This scrupulous thought process resonates in the minds of those that wish to defraud and maim. I don't submit that their actions are callous and calculated, but it leads me to question the lengths people will go for their own personal gain. This issue I believe is quite removed from the counterfeiting of goods. That is just to upkeep vanity and face. However, this horrific practice of harming innocent people for wealth and other selfish ideals only goes to debase the name and spirit of the Chinese people.

well fake alcohol would be a very lucrative thing for them to pursue... and it'd be easy: just dilute it with something else.

Funny how there isn't anything in the local media regarding the delay in the recall of the milk powder...
The first kiddo also died way back in May...
Gotta love the government and media (which might as well be the same thing) over here

well funny how i'm not actually surprised about that. i'm sure there's a lot of things that aren't broadcast across local media as well...

Guess it's a good thing I've grown out of drinking powered milk eh
Now let's just hope there's no fake alcohol in China for the next 5 months.
