I did a little looking around into the different police forces around the world to understand just what they are like.

New South Wales Police Force
Size: 14,500
HQ: Parramatta

The NSWPF is the largest and most well paid police force in Australia. The force began in infantile form in 1788, weeks after the First Fleet landed in Sydney. It was only officiated in 1862 with the passing of legislation. The NSW Police College is located in Goulburn, and students graduate with an Associate Degree of Police Practice offered by Charles Sturt University.

Hong Kong Police Force 香港警察
Size: 31,000
HQ: Wanchai

The HKPF is one of the largest police forces in the world. It began in 1844 with only 35 people and has expanded ever since. In the late 1800s, the British reigned in the bravado of the force and established systems of efficiency and discipline, which has been engrained ever since. The Japanese invasion destroyed the force, and it was subsequently rebuilt. Rising instability in Hong Kong caused by increasing communist sentiments caused deadly rioting for much of the 1960s. In particular, the 1967 riots (六七暴動) went on for ten months and was orchestrated by leftist students supported by PRC militia conducted bombings and gruesome murders caused immense public outcry. In 1969, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the honour of royalty on the HKPF for its valour during the riots and subsequently renamed the force to the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. The RHKPF was only one of ten other police forces in the Commonwealth to have had this honour, the most famous of which is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The 'Royal' was dropped on handover. In the late 1960s and 1970s, the HKPF underwent a shake up to rid corruption, and in the process established the Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC). Hong Kong police is one of the most advanced and highly respected police forces in the world. Not many police forces have as much public confidence as the HKPF has amongst its citizens.

Metropolitan Police Department 警視庁
Size: 40,000
HQ: Kasumigaseki

The MPD was established in 1874 and is the only metropolitan police force in Japan. The next level down are the urban police forces of Osaka and Kyoto. There are 43 prefectural police forces and one district police for of Hokkaido. In total, there are 260,000 police personnel in Japan. The MPD operates 891 kobans (交番/police box) across Tokyo. At any one time, there are several police officers in a koban, which serves as their rest quarters when they are not walk beat. These officers have an intimiate knowledge of their surrounding area, and survey the neighbourhood twice a year asking households to fill in their residence information cards. They also take note of the elderly, sick and those living by themselves. All this information is taken back to the koban and stored in case it is needed for use in the future.
