I say to everyone get your car and drive to work. Don't rely on this stupid trains anymore, which get more stupid after 4 January 2009 when prices go up by an average of 7.5%. There are further increases annually to 2011 totalling 25%.
With petrol now less than $1, having a car is even more convenient. Who would want to pay an extra 25% for poor, dirty and substandard service? Fare increases above inflation (~2.5% pa), especially in this economic environment should not be made without scrutiny.
I'm going to be hit double because bus fares are also increasing. Sydney Buses will also raise fares in 2009.
I suggest people buy their traveltens, train monthly and yearly tickets on 3 January 2009 just before the fare rise.
The price-rise impact
Let's see how the prices will be affected by the price rises. Firstly, I buy a yellow travelpass which costs me:
- Now - $47
- 2009 - $50 (6.4%)
- 2010 - $52
- 2011 - $55
- 2012 - $58 (23.4%)
- Now - $31
- 2009 - $32 (3.2%)
- 2010 - $34
- 2011 - $37
- 2012 - $38 (22.6%)
- Now - $14.40
- 2009 - $15.20 (5.6%)
Make the most of the only free public transport in Sydney. Although it would probably be faster if you had walked instead.

yeah grace the public transport system does eventually get us to where we need to go, that's for sure. as well, it is also true that owning a car probably won't solve any problems either.
i think that my perspective comes from the fact that i've been to other cities and have had a chance to compare the services. i admit that the ability for asian cities to support such efficient transport networks are due to population factors that just don't exist here, and i support merely just an ideal in sydney. despite this, i think that there are great avenues for change in management and in the culture of how the system operates that would surely make it more commuter friendly.

omigod... so much hatred for the system... :S
i've relied on public transport for the past 5 years, and haven't really felt severely disappointed...
dirty trains? well, blame the inconsiderate dumass who cbb to take their own shit with them and place them in the bins in stations, or blame those insecure teenage dumwits who thinks that vandalism is an acceptable and exhilirating passtime.
substandard service? only when there are inconsiderate, egoistic ppl who thinks that jumping onto the trains as a suicide method will not inconvene others. or maybe those drunken f**ktards who just doesn't know when to stop drinking, and just happen to pass out on their journey home.
and will owning a car solve all this? well, it'll help u to turn a blind eye on this situation. ppl will still litter, get drunk, vandalise public and private property. owning a car has its benefits, admittably, but i believe that there will b ppl who wont benefit from owning a car. eg, me. living so close to the station, i think its far cheaper to use the public transport.
yeah, our public transport system sucks, but it gets me from point a to point b safely and efficiently (99% of the time).
