slaughter me

The Australian Bureau of Statistics yesterday released the monthly figures for livestock and meat. It was to my surprise the amount of livestock (trend estimate) slaughtered in this country in just one month:
  • 676,600 cattle to produce 180,449 tonnes of beef (0.27)
  • 65,500 calves to produce 2,140 tonnes of veal (0.03)
  • 948,300 sheep to produce 19,680 tonnes of mutton (0.02)
  • 1,775,000 lambs to produce 35,707 tonnes of lamb (0.02)
  • 374,000 pigs to produce 26,824 tonnes of pig (0.07)
Do we really eat that much? I would guess that if there were chickens included in the statistics, the number could be in the millions.

So there's your trivia for the day. The livestock we kill the most is lambs, and we get the least meat from them those poor lambs. The prize for the best meat ratio per animal goes to the cows. You can eat nearly every part of a cow, and it shows in the stats too!

wow that's amazing =\ well i can safely say that I did not eat any of those cattle, calves or sheep. May have had a lamb and pig or two. As for chickens, well...if you know me well enough you know how many chickens I go through in a month.
