Victorian bushfires worst natural disaster Australian in history
131 people have been killed and 750 homes destroyed in bushfires around Melbourne's outskirts in the worst bushfire disaster since Ash Wednesday, 26 years ago. Complete townships have been erased off the map. For further coverage on the situation there, go to the Country Fire Authority website.
Melbourne recorded its highest ever temperature on Saturday at 47°C. On Sunday, it recorded its lowest maximum temperature this year at 22°C, a difference of 25°C.
In New South Wales, searing heat fanned over 50 blazes across the state over the weekend. Some fires are burning out of control, including one at Peats Ridge north of Sydney. For further NSW coverage, go to the NSW Rural Fire Service website.
It is known that most of these bushfires have been deliberately lit. I really don't understand the mind of a firebug. For what reason would you want to start a fire knowing the conditions are perfect for the spread of wildfires that could potentially destroy property and harm people?

Northern Queensland drowning under torrential rain
The township of Ingham has been inundated with 2 severe floods in the last week. The floods peaked at close to 12 metres. Australia's air force has been deployed to send immediate ration relief to the cut off town. There is more rain expected this week, though conditions are easing slightly. Townsville is also suffering flood damage.

How else could conditions be so bad and so vastly different along the same strip of East Coast? *sigh*
